Isle of Wight Council Elections • 7th May 2026 • Cowes North Ward
Independent for Cowes North
Experienced local representation for the residents and businesses of Cowes North. Standing as an Independent candidate in the Isle of Wight Council elections on 7 May 2026.
Why Richard Hollis
Richard first came to Cowes in 1988. He purchased his Grade II listed home in 1990 and spent years carefully restoring it. He moved permanently to the island in 2006 and has lived full time in Cowes with his wife Ursula ever since.
Before the Isle of Wight, Richard served as a Councillor and Chairman of Planning for Richmond Borough Council in London, while running his own printing business. That combination of public service and practical experience has defined his approach ever since.
Since making Cowes his home, Richard has served as Councillor for Parkhurst and Newport West, held the chairmanships of both Planning and Licensing and Scrutiny at the Isle of Wight Council, and is currently Chairman of Cowes Town Council’s Planning and Licensing Committee. He understands how local government works and how to make it work for residents.
“I have lived in Cowes for nearly twenty years. I know this community, I understand its concerns, and I am ready to work hard as your Independent representative on the Isle of Wight Council.”
"I chose Cowes. I stayed for the harbour, the High Street, the people. That is worth protecting."Richard Hollis
Priorities
Practical, locally-focused commitments for the residents and businesses of Cowes North. These are the issues Richard hears about most and will act on first.
Cowes’ high-tech manufacturing and distinctive retail sectors must be supported so they can continue to thrive and drive local prosperity.
The A3020 must remain open except in genuine emergencies. Any planned works need to be widely publicised well in advance.
Low-cost permit parking for residents is essential. Short-stay options must remain available for visitors, especially in the town centre and on the Parade.
Affordable, reliable cross-Solent services are vital. Richard will push for a full evaluation of the chain ferry replacement, keeping an open mind on alternatives.
Decisions must fully consider their impact on residents and businesses, including late-night events at Northwood House that cause disruption.
CHC should genuinely serve harbour users, promote independent local services, and contribute more to public facilities like slipways and the Medina Crossing.
Many local roads are in an unacceptable state, giving a poor impression to visitors and causing daily frustration for residents.
Southern Water must improve communications so that pollution incidents trigger immediate public awareness for residents and visitors swimming from local beaches.
Why Independent
Richard stands as an Independent because Cowes North deserves a councillor who answers to residents, not to a party. He will vote on every issue based on what is right for this community, not on what a party whip dictates.
He will build strong working relationships with Red Funnel, Island Roads, Cowes Harbour Commission, the Trustees of Northwood House, Southern Water, and the many other organisations that shape daily life in Cowes. Independence means being free to hold all of them to account.
Richard wants to hear your concerns and discuss the issues that matter to you. He is available by phone or email.
